When a caller calls:One of the co-ordinators answers the phone and takes your information about the illegal activities. The co-ordinator may issue you a code number, this number is used to identify your information. Your information is then passed on to the respective investigating agency. Crime Stoppers accepts information on everything inclusive of traffic offences, welfare fraud, UI fraud, bootlegging, smuggling, sale of cigarettes to minors, poaching, and everything else from driving without a license to murder. Crime Stoppers does not subscribe to call display.
What events take place before a reward is allocated:
Callers are asked to call back and check on their tip and then the caller is advised whether or not a reward will be paid. The investigation is completed and results are reported to the co-ordinators.
How the reward is determined and collected:
The co-ordinators determine if a reward will be paid and suggest the amount of reward to the board. The board then makes the final decision. Rewards range from $50 – $2000. Crime Stoppers is not a Government funded organization. Cash rewards are NOT TAX DOLLARS! Crime Stoppers is a charitable organization funded by private TAX-EXEMPT donations. Reward money comes from donations, community fundraising, and corporate sponsors.
The media is a very important component of Crime Stoppers. An unsolved crime may be re-enacted and shown on television or may be publicized in a newspaper or aired on the radio. The media also brings the program to the attention of the public.
